If you are witnessing a hostage situation:

If the hostage-taker is unaware of your presence, DO NOT INTERVENE!

• Building administrator should be notified. He/she may wish to initiate lockdown procedures or evacuation.
• Call 911. Give dispatcher details of situation.
• Seal off area near hostage scene.
• Police will take control of hostage scene; building administrator coordinates with police for safety and welfare of students and staff.
• Document all activities.

It taken hostage:      

• Cooperate with hostage-taker to the fullest possible extent.
• Try not to panic. Calm students if they are present.
• Treat the hostage-taker as normally as possible.
• Be respectful to the hostage-taker.
• Ask permission to speak; do not argue or make suggestions.
