Fight/Disturbance

Fight or Disturbance in Progress:

  • Ensure the safety of students and staff first.
  • Notify security/law enforcement. Summon assistance.
  • Work as a team, especially when separating participants.
  • Disperse any gathering of students. Do not let them incite the combatants.
  • In case of weapons or extremely violent behavior, allow an avenue of escape for the suspect.
  • When combatants are separated, move them so they cannot hear or see each other.
  • Be directive when telling students what to do. Speak loudly enough to be heard, buy try to avoid yelling. Do not become a trigger in an explosive situation.
  • Document all activities witnessed by staff.
  • Deal with event according to school’s discipline policy.
  • Notify parents/guardians of students involved in fight. Superintendent and police may be notified as necessary, or as indicated by school policy.
  • Address counseling needs of participants and witnesses. Implement post-crisis procedures as needed.
