| Emergency Preparedness | | The Saint Paul Schools works with city, county, and state emergency management and response agencies to assure that the Saint Paul Public Schools is always, and to the highest degree possible, ready for any emergency. We do this by employing and continuously enhancing four levels of emergency management:
Mitigation/Prevention: Although schools have no control over some to the hazards that may impact them, such as a tornado, we can take actions to mitigate or minimize the impact of such incidents. One way we do this is by training staff and students and conducting regular emergency drills.
In addition, we can take actions to reduce the likelihood of accidents and violence by instituting policies and procedures, implementing violence prevention and anti-bullying programs and taking steps to improve the schools climate on our campuses.
Preparedness: Good planning and training will facilitate a rapid, coordinated, effective response when an emergency occurs. Every school in the Saint Paul District has a school safety plan based upon the recommended guidelines of the State of Minnesota and FEMA, but that is tailored it its unique characteristics.
Response: All Saint Paul School employees are trained to effectively respond to an emergency situation in their building. Regular emergency drills help assure that this training will be applied in an actual emergency.
Recovery: The goal of recovery is to return to learning as quickly as possible. The Saint Paul Schools facilities planning and maintenance staff are prepared to restore the infrastructure of our schools as quickly as possible. Our Crisis Response Team of school counselors, school social workers, and school nurses are trained to provide for the emotional needs of our students and staff in the aftermath of an emergency or tragedy.
