Saint Paul Public Schools utilizes the Emergency/Disaster Preparedness Planning Guide, Minnesota Department of Public Safety, as the foundation for safety and emergency planning.
In addition the District applies the principles of several complementary approaches to school safety in planning for a possible emergency. -Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) -Minnesota Incident Management System -Threat Management through Assessment and Counseling (TMAC) -Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Multi-hazard Emergency Planning for Schools -International Critical Incident Stress Foundation Training Each site in the District has regular safety and security audits. These audits are used to help sites in developing a comprehensive safety plan. While these plans follow the above guidelines, they are site specific, to accommodate site-specific needs and concerns.
Staff members are regularly given opportunities to attend school safety workshops and to have safety and security professionals speak with School Emergency Response Teams, parent and community groups.
At a classroom level we have developed a Classroom Emergency and Safety Procedures Guide. This guide gives staff useful and specific direction for handling emergency situations.
The Saint Paul School District uses a multi-layered approach to safety and security that addresses district, school/site, and classroom level emergencies. We understand that safety and security is a combination of physical security, social interaction, school climate, and community involvement.
