| National Preparedness Month | | National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort held each September
to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies
in their homes, businesses and schools. National Preparedness Month
2006 is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The goal
of the month is to increase public awareness about the importance of
preparing for emergencies and to encourage individuals to take action.
Schools should review and update their School Safety/Emergency Response
Plans, including having a current list of all members of the
safety/emergency response team and other staff who are certified in
first aid and CPR. All staff should be aware of their duties in an
emergency. Review the Classroom Emergency and Safety Procedures Guide
and make sure that every classroom and office has this guide displayed
in a handy location for quick access.
Individuals and families should take these simple steps to become better prepared:
- Have a kit of emergency supplies that includes a supply
water and food for three days. The kit should also include a first aid
kit, a battery powered radio and a flash light.
- Make a plan for what you and your family will do in an emergency.
The plan should include a communications and a gathering place in case
of evacuation.
- Be knowledgeable about the different threats that could affect your family and community.
- Get involved by taking training in Red Cross first aid and
volunteer through the Red Cross or Citizen Corps programs such as
Neighborhood Watch and CERT.
