Medical Emergencies

For a Medical Emergency/Life Threatening Injury:

  • Teacher should notify the school office/nurse immediately for on-site assistance.
  • Office should make emergency calls so teachers can give full attention to the victim(s).
  • If no response, or delayed response from office, teachers should call 911 and notify the office as soon as possible, (Fire and Police always confirm 911 calls with the office. Services may be delayed if the office cannot confirm the emergency).
  • Do not attempt to move a person who is ill or injured unless they are in immediate danger of further injury.
  • If possible, isolate the affected student/staff member. Disperse onlookers and keep others from congregating in the area.
  • Check breathing. Is airway clear? Is victim in a position to facilitate breathing?
  • Help stop bleeding. Pressure on wound or elevation of wound may help stop or slow bleeding.
  • Protect yourself from bodily fluids (use gloves if available).
  • Check for vital signs. Initiate first aid, if you are trained.
  • Comfort the victim(s) and reassure them that medical attention is on the way.
  • After the victim’s immediate needs have been taken care of, remain to assist emergency medical services personnel with pertinent information about the incident.

In case of traumatic medical emergency or death at school:

  • Notify superintendent
  • Notify victim’s parents, guardians or family
  • Activate post-crisis procedures if necessary

• In all other medical emergencies, assess individual’s need for post-crisis intervention.

Non-Emergency Plan:

  • For all non-life threatening illnesses and injuries, staff should call the office/nurse.
