Lockdown

Lockdown with Warning:

This procedure is to be used when the threat is outside the school building. The school may have been notified of a potential threat outside of the building.

  • Order and announce “lockdown with warning” procedures. Repeat announcement several times. Be direct. Code words lead to confusion.
  • Brings students in from playground/outdoor activities.
  • Lock exterior doors.
  • Clear students from hallways, restrooms, or any room that cannot be secured and does not offer concealment.
  • Teachers should lock classroom doors, pull shades and keep students away from windows.
  • Control all movement, but continue classes. Disable bells. Move on announcement only; ignore bells if they are not disabled.
  • After threat has passed, issue the “All Clear” advisory.

Lockdown Intruder (these actions must happen rapidly):

  • Order and announce “lockdown with intruder.” Repeat announcement several times. Be direct. Code words lead to confusion.
  • Immediately direct students, staff and visitors into nearest classroom or secured space.
  • Teachers should lock classroom/secured space doors. Turn off lights.
  • DO NOT lock exterior doors.
  • Students should be out of view from hallway, quiet and flat on the floor.
  • Classes that are outside the building SHOULD NOT enter the building. Move outside classes to primary off-campus evacuation site.
  • After threat passes, give “All Clear” announcement. No staff should answer/open doors until this announcement is made.

Some others threats may override lockdown, i.e., confirmed fire, intruder in classroom, etc. Consider making an action plan for people in large, common areas—i.e. cafeteria and gymnasium.

Lockdown may be initiated in non-threatening circumstances to keep people away from areas where there may be a medical emergency or disturbance.
